Description"Slate Line" is een lang pad van grijze stenen die tegen elkaar aanliggen, met hun meest platte kant op de grond. De reeks stenen, verzameld in de natuur, zijn niet bewerkt, maar wel in een bepaalde volgorde gelegd door de kunstenaar.
Long werkt met materialen die hij aantreft in de natuur. Wanneer de stenen verplaatst zijn, bijvoorbeeld naar een museum zoals bij "Slate Line", dan dient de beschouwer de natuurlijke omgeving in zijn gedachten te houden.
Richard Long's sculptures are sometimes no more than traces of the presence of man in the landscape. He registers the traces left behind on photo and film, or he draws the road travelled by him schematically on a map. Another possibility is that he collects branches or rocks during a walk and arranges these in the form of a square, a rectangle, spiral or circle.
When the work is transferred from the natural environment to a suitable space, it exists emphatically as a work of art.
