Versierd in famille verte email.
Pair of figures of a standing boy on a high square base, each holding a vase with a lotus against his breast. Decorated in famille verte enamels. The boys wearing a dou-dou (a type of apron), flower sprays on their bodies. A peony on all four sides of the base wich is unglazed underneath.
The pair is traditionally identified as the twin brothers He-he Erxian, symbolic of harmony and union. The dating of such figures is subject of discussion. As Sargent has remarked, no such pairs are known in old, documented collections like Dresden or Drottningholm and the first reliable references to such figures seem to date to the late 19th century (Ref. Sargent). Furthermore, most figures are clumsily made with rudimentary feet and poorly detailed fingers and faces. The decoration, too, is usually relatively coarse although examples of slightly better quality are known. The existence of Kangxi or even earlier figures certainly cannot be ruled out – an example in the Butler Collection is dated to the Shunzhi reign (ref. Butler, Medley & Little) – but until more documentary evidence is found, it appears that most of the low quality pieces are quite late.
