Flower power tegenover opdringerige reclames. Beide invloeden komen samen in de Memphis stijl. Ashoka (304-282 v.
The name of the lamp, Ashoka, was not chosen at random. What does it mean? In the early sixties, the creator of the lamp, Ettore Sottsass, was in India, working closely with local craftsmen. It was a time of spiritual experience, very different from the materialistic society of the United States, which he had come to know in a more realistic way. 'Flower power' versus aggressive advertising. The two influences come together in the Memphis style. Ashoka (304-282 BC) is considered one of the greatest Indian emperors. He is credited with the spread of Buddhism throughout India and later the world. The arms of the lamp radiate light in all directions, like a contemporary multi-armed Buddha.
