BeschrijvingPenseelpot van Chinees porselein. Recht opgaand cilindrisch model, iets verdiept in midden bodem onderzijde, en heeft een verder vlakke bodem. Versierd in famille verte met diverse emailkleuren, met een voorstelling van een slapende student die in een 'ballon' de examengod Kuei Xing ziet.
Cylindrical brush pot, the partly unglazed base with a small, retraced glazed circle in the centre. Decorated in famille verte enamels with a continuous scene of a pavilion and pines, a student lying asleep with his head on a table, a dream emanating from his head shows him following Kuei Xing, the horned deity of examinations and literature.
If this brush pot was a present for a student facing the exams in the capital, it must have assured him of his success. The ‘balloon’ containing his dream and wishful thoughts is an old Chinese iconographic element for conveying thoughts and combining inner and outer realities – it certainly is not an invention of modern Western comic artists! The Municipal Museum in The Hague has another brush pot with Kuei Xing.
