BeschrijvingHet bloemstilleven stond in het Nederland van de zeventiende eeuw op hoog niveau. In de kunst van de twintigste eeuw werd het echter niet meer serieus genomen: men associeerde het vooral met kitsch. Dat vormde de uitdaging voor Ger van Elk bij een serie die hij Modern Flowers of 1982 noemde. Hij fotografeerde boeketten exotische bloemen (in dit geval celosia’s), beschilderde de foto, waarna hij er opnieuw een foto van maakte. Die foto voorzag hij vervolgens wederom van kleurige verfklodders en -slierten, à la de Amerikaanse action painter Jackson Pollock. Misschien wel kitsch in het kwadraat, en daardoor juist weer ... kunst?
While Dutch still life floral paintings were very popular in the 16th and 17th century, the genre declined in popularity soon after. In the 20th century this type of painting was described as being 'kitsch'.
The series 'Modern Flowers of 1982' are painted photographs of bouquets of exotic flowers (celosia's in this specific painting), which Van Elk then photographed. This photo would then be smeared with paint strings and daubs.
That technique reminds us of paintings by American action painter Jackson Pollock. However, the result is completely different and perhaps could be defined as kitsch. Again.
