BeschrijvingThis imperial square bowl (or cup) showcases the innovations of the Jiajing Period (1522-1566). Its design features a dragon entwined with swirling patterns of Lingzhi fungi and foliage. The decorative patterns are depicted in under-glazed blue, which contrasts sharply with the overglazed yellow that envelops the entire bowl. On the base, inscriptions state “Made in the Jiajing Period of the Great Ming (Ch: 大明嘉靖年製)” in regular script. Inside, the bowl bears the Chinese character “shou 壽 (longevity)” in seal script. Jiajing Emperor was well-known for his Taoist beliefs, and the overall decorative patterns of this bowl embody the Taoist quest for immortality.
The uneven use of yellow glaze and the somewhat coarse decoration were characteristic of this period when the Jiajing Emperor started designating private kilns in Jingdezhen for producing imperial wares under court oversight. As a result, these items are of slightly lower quality than those crafted in the imperial workshop, but they are still considered imperial wares.
