BeschrijvingVerdorde vijgenbladerenhoudt het midden tussen een stilleven en een landschap. Er is geen scheidslijn aangebracht tussen voor- en achtergrond, het stilleven loopt doo loopt over in het landschap. Het groen van de twee vijgenbladeren op de voorgeond wordt met de twee tinten blauw van heuvels en lucht op de achtergrond verbonden met het grijsbruin van de aarde.
Fernhout maakte het schilderij tijdens een verblijf in Alassio aan de italiaanse Riviera, waar hij en zijn vrouw verbleven van 1936 tot 1939.
Withered Fig Leaves can not be defined as a stillife, nor as a landscape painting. It is a combination of the two. There is no clear demarcation between the leaves in the front and the hills in the back. This smooth transition is also the result of the use of color; the green of the leaves are connected to the shades of green and blue of the hills and the sky, as well as to the brown hues of the soil.
Fernhout painted this painting during his stay in Alassio, along the Italian Riviera, where he and his wife lived from 1936 until 1939.
