All of them make generalised statements on the feminine sex. The misogynist tenor of these sayings, which are often used mindlessly in everyday conversation, is laid bare in the artist’s book, in which 102 pages each display a sentence about women. For the installation Ma collection de proverbes (1974), Messager embroidered the proverbs onto pieces of white cloth, thus carrying out handiwork typically associated with women but sewing the lines crookedly and inexpertly onto unhemmed linen. Compared to the “sloppiness” with which she boycotts the usual command of careful stitching, the accurate handwriting in the book meets soci- etal expectations of womanly neatness. The misogynistic statements are thus made to appear practically schizophrenic when ren- dered in the sinuous and refined female script.
