DescriptionSchoteltje van Chinees porselein. Op voetring; iets opstaand, platte rand; opstaande, bruin geglazuurde liprand. Ko-akae voor de Japanse markt, versierd in famille verte emailkleuren (groen, geel, licht-aubergine, ijzerrood) met twee elkaar aankijkende hanen, een vlinder, een insect, gras en een bloem. Op de rand een doorlopende bloemrank en op de bodem gemerkt met een vierkante fu (veel geluk) in onderglazuur blauw.
Het motief met hanen was populair op ko-akae en ko-metsuke. De versiering nogal informeel. Dit type goed was bestemd voor de Japanse markt. De snelle evenwichtige penseelvoering wijst hier op. De haan vertegenwoordigt yang, het manlijke. Een paar vechtende hanen staan voor moed en krijgslust.
Flessen met soortgelijke decoratie zijn in graven gevonden gedateerd 1628-1634
Saucer on a footring, with shallow sides, and a flat rim. Decorated in famille verte enamels with two cockerels facing each other, a butterfly, an insect, a flower and grasses. Around the rim a continuous flower spray, the base with a square fu (good luck) mark in underglaze blue
The motif of cockerels was popular on ko-akae and ko-sometsuke. The painting is rather informal, done with the quick, balanced strokes that characterise these wares ordered for the Japanese market. The cock represents yang, the masculine principle, and a pair of fighting cocks symbolises courage and martial spirit. Bottles with this design have been found in tombs dated to 1628 and 1634.
