DescriptionIngebonden boek met een witte omslag. Op de voorzijde en op de achterzijde van de omslag van het boek staat in het Engels, Frans, Duits, Italiaans, Spaans en Japans: This is a book of photographs taken in over a hundred stations of the Paris metro.
Each photograph is centred on a billboard and in the lower left-hand corner of each billboard vertical white and coloured (orange) stripes are noticeable. The pieces of white and orange vertically-striped paper put up/pasted in this way were a pretext for Michel Cenet’s photographs.
The pasting-up, which covered over 150 metro stations and was visible during the last week of March June 1973.
Finally, these pasted pieces of stripped paper were and still must be considered as part of a work which began, was carried on and is still in process outside and beyond the place and time of this particular proposal.
The photo-album is here a partial re-presentation of the work as it stands, each individual presentation being unique but always considered as a fragment of the entire work simultaneously carried out.
Every new presentation of the work, in its different time and place, erases the previous one, an erasure which the photographs naturally do not question; in addition they can help to understand a work which, bot as a whole and in its parts, is their subject. This album is intentionally incomplete in relation to the whole operation it illustrates in order to avoid giving the illusion of a complete and final collection; it is only a partial representation of what is (only) a fragment of a work in progress.
The photographs are therefore explicitly presented as a legend of the work under consideration and bear no more relation to what they represent than a post-card of the Eiffel Tower does to the Eiffel Tower itself.
