DescriptionLorrkkon of ‘hollow log coffins’ zijn holle grafpalen. Ze zijn een belangrijke en karakteristieke sculptuurvorm in het gebied van West Arnhem Land. In een ceremoniële context worden deze door termieten uitgeholde en versierde boomstammen gebruikt om de beenderen van de overledene in op te bergen.
Na het overlijden van een Aboriginal in Arnhem Land wordt hij of zij begraven in een ondiep graf. Na anderhalf tot drie jaar vindt de laatste rouwceremonie plaats. De botten worden opgegraven en beschilderd met rode oker of verbrijzeld en in een holle boomstam gestopt. De grafpaal wordt onder begeleiding van ceremoniële dans en zang in een gat in de grond geplaatst en aan de elementen overgelaten. De patronen die op de Lorrkkon worden aangebracht, houden verband met de clan van de overledene en dienen als identificatie. Lorrkkon worden tegenwoordig ook gemaakt voor de hedendaagse kunstmarkt.
