DescriptionGrote balustervormige dekselpot van Chinees porselein. Het stuk is rijk versierd met emailkleuren van het "famille verte" type. Verschillende kleuren groen overheersen, maar ook goud, zwart, donkerblauw, aubergine, wit, geel, encre en ijzerrood zijn toegepast. Deze emailkleuren zijn op het glazuur aangebracht door middel van een tweede bakproces bij een tamelijk lage temperatuur, nadat de geglazuurde pot in een "groot" vuur voor de eerste keer gebakken was. De voorstelling is over het gehele oppervlak gecomponeerd en toont in een moeraslandschap enkele grote lotusplanten met wijd spreidende bladeren, bloemknoppen en geopende bloemen. In het water staan twee naar elkaar toegewende kraanvogels, er zwemmen twee eenden, op een stengel zit een ijsvogel, een tweede komt aanvliegen. In de lucht fladderen allerlei vlinders en insecten, waarbij een grote zwarte vlinder het meest opvalt. Op het deksel eveneens een waterlandschap met lotusplanten. De bovenkant van de knop in onderglazuur blauw met een chrysant in goud.

Decorated in famille verte enamels with an all-over decoration of a waterscape with large, flowering lotus plants, butterflies, insects, two cranes, a kingfisher on a stalk, another in flight, and paddling ducks. On the neck flower sprays, the cover similarly decorated with a waterscape and lotus plants. The underglaze-blue knob with a gold chrysanthemum.
The naturalistic painting on this jar exemplifies the opulence of the famille verte palette and the painter’s craftsmanship. It fits into a group of pieces that shows a rather free, exuberant way of treating elements from nature in complex compositions, filling the entire space, with no regard for relative dimensions. For example, the lotus plants and butterflies on this jar are far too big in relation to the cranes, but it creates the impression of a view into a fantastic, fairy-tale waterscape. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has an almost identical jar (ref. Oxford) and it is likely that both jars were once part of a set of five, comprising three covered jars and two tall beaker vases. A crack in the neck of this example was overpainted during the 18th century in Europe with slightly softer enamels; a similar ‘repair’ is seen on the Oxford jar.
