Lawrence Weiner counts among the pioneers of Conceptual Art, along with Douglas Huebler, Robert Barry, Joseph Kosuth and Sol LeWitt. With his “Statements” - instructions for artworks that take the place of the artwork - he made a seminal contribution to the field. Published in 1968 and distributed as one of the first-ever artists’ books, his work was one reason why Conceptual Art was initially associated with the use of language. The Statements make manifest what was already suggested by Weiner’s earlier, wholly gestural work. When he for example triggers an explosion and describes the resulting crater as an original sculpture, he quickly adds descriptions that supply a kind of linguistic equivalent to the action, for example: “Two minutes of spray on the floor” or “A 36 x 36 removal of lathing or support wall”. When Sol LeWitt presented his Paragraphs on Conceptual Art in 1968, Weiner in turn formulated his own Statement ofintent, specifying that his works did not have to be executed but could consist solely of the idea behind them, as formulated through language alone. And it is just such linguistically determined works that are assembled in this small-format book.
