This plate belongs to an uncommon ceramics group known as “Gennai Ware.” It was produced in the kiln established by Hiraga Gennai 平賀源內 (c.1729-1779). Gennai was a Japanese pharmacologist, author, painter, inventor, translator, and student of Rangaku (western learning). In 1752, he was sent to Nagasaki to study the Western technology and culture conveyed through the VOC. This explains the frequent appearance of Western motifs on the ceramics produced in this kiln.
This plate depicts a scholar with curly hair perched on a rock, while a standing servant presents a plate of fruit beside him. Behind them, scholar rocks are adorned with banana trees. Intricate patterns of swirling flowers and foliage embellish the plate's border.
