In February 1961, a new literary effort was launched with the publication of the first issue of The Floating Bear poetry newsletter. Edited by Diane Di Prima and LeRoi Jones, The Floating Bear followed up on their separate efforts publishing the The Elephant at the Door and Yugen magazines, respectively. Di Prima suggested the title of their joint effort based on a boat Winnie-the-Pooh made out of a honey pot. The first run consisted of 250 copies and their mailing list consisted of 117 names they had culled from their address books, mostly painters, poets, dancers and the like. The Floating Bear was published out of Di Prima's apartment, first on East Houston Street and later on East 4th Street, before she moved to the West Coast. The Floating Bear was issued semi-monthly until the Summer of 1971.
